My life’s mission has been to increase awareness of Sleep Related Breathing Disorders, raise clinical competence for anyone who wants to treat them and advocate for legislative, regulatory and professional changes in the field of Dental Sleep Medicine.

My life’s mission has been to increase awareness of Sleep Related Breathing Disorders, raise clinical competence for anyone who wants to treat them and advocate for legislative, regulatory and professional changes in the field of Dental Sleep Medicine.

My Experiences

I am a guest lecturer at University of the Pacific, Spear Education and Louisiana State University Dental Schools. From 2014 to 2019 I was Editor-in-Chief of Dental Sleep Practice Magazine. In 2019, Dr. Ken Berley and I wrote The Clinician’s Handbook of Dental Sleep Medicine published by Quintessence.

Along with clinical practice, I maintain a busy teaching career, educating dentists around the world through the World Sleep Academy and the World Dentofacial Sleep Society, both parts of the World Sleep Society, as well as enjoying invitations from sleep societies in many countries. I’ve lectured and led workshops at study clubs and the largest conferences in our profession. Quintessence Publishing asked for a Second Edition of The Clinician’s Handbook for Dental Sleep Medicine – now available.

Career Accomplishments

My proudest career accomplishment to date is the advocacy work I did for sleep and breathing wellness which led to a new ADA policy statement in 2017. The policy identified Sleep Related Breathing  Disorders as a set of potentially serious medical conditions and went on to declare that all dentists have an obligation to screen every patient for airway problems. Finally, it emphasized that “dentists are the only health care provider with the knowledge and expertise to provide oral appliance therapy (OAT).”

Serving as the Consultant for the ADA Sleep Related Breathing Disorders has allowed me to continue to influence the American Dental Association to include this vital part of healthcare in everyday dentistry.

I live outside of Seattle in Redmond, Washington with Midge (my wife of over 40 years), Angel & Ginger (our dogs) AND Ossie & Too (our cats). I am a music and movie enthusiast. My vinyl record collection numbers over 2000 records and my film library has hundreds of titles. During our downtime, if we aren’t in our home theater with friends & family, you can usually find Midge and I at a live concert in Seattle.
